Silhouetted against the majestic backdrop of the Caucasus Mountains, Alaverdi Monastery stands not only as the heart and soul of Kakheti but also as a spiritual symbol for all of Georgia. This imposing Orthodox Christian marvel, gracefully situated in the Alazani River valley and dating back to the 9th century, served as a beacon of enlightenment for centuries, attracting scholars, pilgrims, and travelers from near and far. Its soaring dome, intricate frescoes, and timeless architecture continue to captivate visitors, preserving the legacy of Georgia’s deep religious and cultural heritage.
Wine-making was a cornerstone of everyday life for the dedicated Georgian monks who resided here. During periods of frequent invasions, these guardians of faith and tradition safeguarded their unique wine-making methods within the protective walls of Georgian monasteries. Several decades ago, historians and archaeologists made a remarkable discovery at Alaverdi: a sprawling 11th-century wine cellar housing over 40 Qvevri vessels—these colossal earthenware containers served as silent witnesses to the monastery’s illustrious past and to the monks’ unwavering devotion to their craft.

In 2006, with the invaluable support of Badagoni, the ancient wine cellar of the monastery was carefully restored to its former glory. Once again, the local monks at Alaverdi embraced the art of creating a very special monastic wine. They relied on the age-old Kvevri method—a process deeply rooted in Georgian heritage and treated as a sacred inheritance from their forefathers. Each stage of this meticulous method, from selecting the grapes to sealing the clay vessels, reflects a profound respect for history and community.
Today, this lovingly revived cellar is where Badagoni’s qvevri wines are brought to life, including celebrated varieties like “Alaverdi Tradition,” “Saperavi,” “Kisi,” and “Khikhvi,” among others. The collective effort to preserve this unique ancestral knowledge is both inspiring and reassuring. It is a triumph that Badagoni contributed to the preservation of such an important cultural treasure, ensuring that future generations can experience the rich flavors and aromas born of time-honored Georgian traditions.
Tasting Badagoni’s qvevri wine, produced in the monastery’s storied cellar, is like savoring a piece of history. Each sip carries echoes of the centuries, transporting you into a world where devotion, craftsmanship, and tradition converge to form an unforgettable journey through Georgia’s rich and vibrant past.
